The city, with a population of 218,000, is the country`s second largest city and the capital of Hordaland County. In 1070, Bishop Olav Kyrre granted Bergen city rights, and in 1217 King Hakon IV declared it the capital of Norway. The city`s oldest and most famous wooden houses are found on "Bryggen," the former Hanseatic wharf, which is one of four sites in Norway UNESCO-listed. Key attractions include the Hanseatic Museum, Bryggen Museum, Bergenhus Fortress, St. Mary`s Church, St. John`s Church, the Leprosy Museum, and the Aquarium.
