Day 1: Auckland, New Zealand. With over 1 million inhabitants, Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand. It is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. Its nickname "City of Sails" is due to the "thousand boats" that dwell in its harbor. The metropolis spans an 11 km wide strait of volcanic rock and is a paradise for water enthusiasts. It was built in the early 19th century on peninsulas connected by bridges. The bustling heart of the city is the beach promenade with the Coronation Pier, where excursion boats and ferries depart for the neighboring city of Mount Maunganui. In front of it is a 232 m high volcano that offers a fantastic view of white beaches and the harbor. Tauranga`s biggest attraction is the Tauranga District Museum and Historic Village, where 85 replica and restored buildings from colonial times, including a Maori village, a pioneer settlement, and military barracks from the time of the Land Wars, can be visited. 5 km east of Tauranga, Kiwifruit Country proves to be a tourist magnet, a fun park in the style of Disneyland.
