The city is divided into five boroughs, with Manhattan being the heart of the city and also the most famous district. The Royal Naval Dockyard, also known as King`s Wharf, is located on Ireland Island in the westernmost of the nine regions of Bermuda, Sandys Parish. The port facilities were operated by the British as the "Gibraltar of the West" for a long time. It served as a shipyard and supply station for ships traveling between the West Indies in the Caribbean and Nova Scotia. The fort, built between 1814 and 1863, served as a base in both World Wars and was abandoned in 1951.
